Bayswater Man and Van is committed to maintaining the highest reasonably practicable standards of health, safety and welfare for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and transport activities. We recognise that safe working is essential to the quality of our house and office removals services and to the long-term success of our business.
This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety throughout all stages of a move, including packing, lifting, loading, transport and unloading of goods.
Policy Aims and Objectives
Our primary aims are to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm arising from our operations. To achieve this, Bayswater Man and Van will:
Identify, assess and control risks associated with our removal services, including manual handling tasks, use of vehicles, working in and around customer premises, and handling of customer belongings.
Comply with all relevant health and safety legislation, approved codes of practice and industry guidance applicable to removal and transport companies.
Provide and maintain safe vehicles, equipment, tools and protective devices that are suitable for the work undertaken.
Ensure that employees receive appropriate information, instruction, supervision and training to carry out their duties safely and competently.
Promote a positive safety culture where staff are encouraged to report hazards, near misses and incidents without fear of blame, and where continuous improvement is actively pursued.
Management Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety within Bayswater Man and Van rests with the company management. Management will:
Implement, monitor and regularly review this Health and Safety Policy and associated procedures.
Allocate sufficient resources for health and safety, including time for training, maintenance and inspections.
Ensure that risk assessments are carried out for all key activities, including lifting and carrying furniture, loading and securing items in vehicles, working on or near roads, and operating in confined or shared spaces such as corridors, stairwells and car parks.
Take appropriate action to remedy any shortcomings in health and safety performance that are identified during inspections, audits, investigations or staff feedback.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees, whether full time, part time or temporary, share responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment. Employees are required to:
Take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions.
Follow all safety procedures, instructions and training provided by Bayswater Man and Van.
Use vehicles, tools, lifting equipment and personal protective equipment correctly and report any defects or damage immediately.
Cooperate with management in meeting statutory duties and in the implementation of this policy.
Report accidents, incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions as soon as possible so that corrective action can be taken.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Risk assessments are carried out to identify hazards associated with removal activities, and to determine suitable control measures. These assessments cover, where applicable:
Manual handling of large, heavy or awkward items such as furniture, appliances and boxes.
Use of trolleys, dollies, ramps and lifting aids to reduce strain and prevent injury.
Loading and unloading vehicles, including securing loads to prevent movement during transit.
Driving and route planning to minimise risks related to road conditions, parking, access and time pressures.
Working in customer homes, offices and shared buildings, including consideration of access routes, cleanliness, lighting and any specific hazards notified by the customer.
Once identified, risks are controlled through safe systems of work, which may include team lifting techniques, limits on individual lifting weights, use of appropriate equipment, traffic management at loading points and clear communication between team members.
Manual Handling and Lifting Safety
Manual handling is central to our removal services and is therefore a key focus of our health and safety arrangements. Bayswater Man and Van will:
Provide training in correct lifting and carrying techniques, including planning the lift, maintaining good posture and working as a coordinated team.
Encourage the use of handling aids such as sack trucks, skates, furniture sliders and straps wherever reasonably practicable.
Avoid single-person lifts of excessively heavy or bulky items and ensure staff feel empowered to request assistance or equipment when needed.
Assess each job on site to identify special risks, for example narrow stairways, uneven surfaces, poor lighting or long carrying distances, and adapt working methods accordingly.
Vehicle and Driving Safety
Vehicles used by Bayswater Man and Van are maintained in a safe, roadworthy condition and are suitable for their intended use. We will:
Carry out regular checks, inspections and servicing of vehicles in line with manufacturer guidance and legal requirements.
Ensure that goods are loaded and secured correctly to prevent movement, damage or loss during transport.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported promptly to management. This enables appropriate medical assistance, investigation and corrective action to be taken. We will:
Record and investigate incidents to identify root causes and prevent recurrence.
Review risk assessments and procedures in light of any significant incident or pattern of incidents.
Ensure employees know how to respond in an emergency, including fire, personal injury, road traffic incidents and damage to customer property.
